Ginkgo biloba Fails to Prevent Dementia

In a large (3069 participants aged 75 years or older), multiple clinical study, patients were assessed every 6 months for dementia. 120 mg of Ginkgo biloba extract consumed twice a day was not effective in reducing either the overall incidence rate of dementia or Alzheimer disease incidence in elderly individuals with normal cognition or those with mild cognitive impairment.

Astragalus Root Component Retards Cellular Aging

A study conducted by researchers at UCLA has shown that telomere shortening, a factor in cellular aging, has been slowed when the component TAT2, a telomerase activator, is added to lymphocyte cultures.

NIH Funds Four New Centers for Complementary Medicine Research

The National Institutes of Health has funded four new Centers of Excellence for Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine.

The new centers are:

- Metabolic and Immunologic Effects of Meditation at the University of California, San Francisco

- CAM as Countermeasures Against Infectious and Inflammatory Disease at Montana State University, Bozeman

- Center for Herbal Research on Colorectal Cancer at the University of Chicago

- Wisconsin Center for the Neuroscience and Psychophysiology of Meditation at the University of Wisconsin, Madison
